Tom Cashman loaned me his copy. I read enough to know I wanted my own, and I bought two. If you’d like to borrow one, you’re welcome!
The author deals with three shifts that need to be made, to make the move from “attractional” church to missional church. Within each of the three shifts are several provocative sub-categories of change. For each of the three shifts, there is an invitation to change the way we “score” our work. Speaking of church-centric scorekeeping, the author says it’s mostly questions of “how many (attendance), how often (volume of and participation in church activities), and how much (the offerings).” Sound familiar?
“Current scorekeeping actually keeps the church from going missional! What gets rewarded gets done. … That is why scorecards being used to name and measure results are so important. They not only tell you how you are doing, but they also influence what you do in order to make progress or to win. That is why the current scorecard for most congregations actually militates against missional behavior. It rewards antimissional values; it promotes an antimissional ministry agenda.” (p. 68)
